Area Information

Lamar County was created late in 1840 and named for Mirabeau B. Lamar, President of the Republic of Texas. The county, covering 894 square miles, is directly upon the ridge of the divide between the Red and Sulphur rivers, and has excellent natural irrigation from the many creeks that empty into the two rivers.

Paris is located in the approximate center of the county. Early access to Lamar County was by flatboats and small steam-driven paddle wheelers that docked at Fulton's Landing on the Red River. Ports of origin were New Orleans and Shreveport. Larger craft docked at Jefferson, and goods were ferried overland by wagon and oxcart.

The first recorded settlement in our region was in 1826. The town was officially founded by merchant George W. Wright, who donated fifty acres of land in February 1844, when the community was also designated the county seat by voters. It was incorporated on February 3, 1845. The town, originally known as Pinhook, was later named after Paris, France, by one of Wright's employees.

Our community has long been a railroad center. The Texas and Pacific reached town in 1876; the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe plus the St. Louis and San Francisco came in 1887; the Texas Midland (later Southern Pacific) arrived in 1893; and the Paris and Mount Pleasant (Pa-Ma Line) was brought through in 1910. These each contributed greatly to the exponential town growth that occurred from the late 19th century into the early 20th century.

Paris is home to four Fortune 500 companies, and dozens of other companies. Paris was selected by all these companies because of its central location to major consumer markets and excellent transportation network; industrial parks and sites to meet the needs of both large and small industrial users.

Lamar County has a total of five independent public school districts. These districts have five high schools, four middle schools, ten elementary schools and graduate over 650 students annually. The districts also offer a Head Start program, an Even Start adult program, as well as a Pre-K program. Over 14 public schools and 2 private schools offer education to area students.
